Calkins: U of M to celebrate the life of Liza Fletcher with a new soccer stadium
A perfect project with a perfect name
This is a great day in the community. This is a great day for Memphis and for women’s sports and for hope.
The University of Memphis is hosting a press conference this morning to announce the creation of Liza Wellford Fletcher Stadium, a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to the memory of Liza Fletcher.
Liza Fletcher was an athlete and a Memphian. She was smart and athletic and fiercely competitive. She believed in this city. She could run like the wind.
And this project celebrates all of that.
It celebrates women’s sports and women’s excellence.
It celebrates the soccer program that won its first conference championship when Fletcher played forward on the team.
It celebrates the university where Fletcher chose to begin her studies and the city she continued to call home.
“We are calling this project Liza’s Light for a reason,” said University of Memphis women’s soccer coach Brooks Monaghan. “It really is how she lived her life.”
