The legacy of Liza Fletcher lives on: University of Memphis announces new stadium
Today, the University of Memphis announced the development of the Liza Wellford Fletcher Stadium – a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to the memory of Liza Fletcher, a former UofM soccer player.
The event was a celebration of a life that left an indelible mark on our community. Liza was a passionate athlete, a beloved teacher, and a beacon of light in Memphis. Her legacy will be forever honored through the construction of the Liza Wellford Fletcher Stadium, a space that will elevate the university’s soccer and track programs to new heights.
The press conference was attended by a broad spectrum of individuals deeply invested in the future of University of Memphis athletics. Among them were university supporters, stakeholders, fans, and alumni. The presence of Liza Fletcher’s family and close friends added a deeply personal touch to the event, underscoring the significance of the project.
Representatives from key organizations were also in attendance, reflecting the strong community backing for this initiative. University officials, including Athletic Director Ed Scott, and UofM President Bill Hardgrave, were on hand to express their commitment and highlight its importance to the university's future.
The Liza Wellford Fletcher Stadium, a new home for UofM’s soccer and track and field teams, is a symbol of growth and ambition. It will provide a much-needed upgrade to the university’s athletic facilities, positioning UofM as a leader in collegiate sports.
The first phase of the project is designed to lay the foundation for a world-class facility that will serve our student-athletes for generations to come. Through the Liza’s Light University of Memphis Soccer and Track Stadium Fund, the UofM is seeking to raise $7 million to complete this initial phase, which includes the construction of a grandstand for the soccer and track stadium, a modern press box, and a dedicated women’s soccer team area. Additionally, the framework for the men’s soccer and track facilities will be established, ensuring that over 100 student-athletes will soon have access to state-of-the-art amenities.
These enhancements are essential to maintaining and elevating the competitive edge of UofM’s athletic programs. With modern locker rooms, film rooms, and training spaces, UofM athletes will have the resources they need to train, compete, and excel at the highest levels.
The Liza Wellford Fletcher Stadium represents a significant step forward for UofM Athletics. It will provide a top-tier environment for our student-athletes and enhance the experiences of Tigers fans and the broader Memphis community. The stadium will serve as a gathering place, a source of pride, and an example of excellence.
We are calling on alumni, fans, and supporters to contribute to a cause that will leave a lasting impact on UofM sports and honor Liza Fletcher. A variety of naming opportunities are available, allowing donors to leave their mark. From the stadium grandstand to the hall of champions, there are numerous ways for those interested to become a permanent part of UofM’s future.
As the campaign moves forward, the support of the Memphis community will be crucial in bringing this vision to life. For more information on how you can get involved, please visit www.LizasLight.org or contact LizasLight@memphis.edu.
